How to Make the Most of 2012

Jeffery A. Raker January 1, 2012

Romans 7:14-24a “We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Two things are needed in order to be on a pathway of discipleship, growing in your faith:

FIRST Essential

You need to be in a personal relationship with Jesus

SECOND Essential

You need to maintain and grow that relationship with effort

How do you get started and make 2012 a great year in your faith journey:

--> INSPECT your faith

2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?”

Ephesians 6:10-18 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

--> INITIATE

Be strong - Put on – Do these things, don't wait, do them.

After you have done everything” (v 13c)

--> Follow the INSIGHT

Notice who the enemy is?

Do you know that the enemy has studied your life and knows your weaknesses? Do you know them? Do you know how to grow strong to defend against his attacks?

Put on the full armor of God:

  • Belt of Truth

  • Breastplate of Righteousness

  • Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

  • Shield of Faith

  • Helmet of Salvation

  • Sword of the Spirit
